The Theatre Library Association is delighted to invite you to the annual presentation of the TLA Book Awards, honoring English language works of scholarship on live and recorded performance published in 2019.
The virtual TLA Book Awards Ceremony will include remarks from this year’s winning authors, a memorial tribute to long-time Freedley Award juror and theatre historian Don Wilmeth, and a slideshow of related special collections materials from the holdings of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
This event will take place via Zoom as a public program of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in New York City on Friday, October 16, 2020 from 5:30-6:30 PM EST.

The 2019 George Freedley Memorial Award for an exemplary work in the field of live theatre or performance will be awarded to Juliane Braun for Creole Drama: Theatre and Society in Antebellum New Orleans, published by the University of Virginia Press. A Special Jury Prize will be awarded to Paul A. Scolieri for Ted Shawn: His Life, Writings, and Dances, published by Oxford University Press. This year’s Freedley Award Jury consisted of Annie Holt, Beth Kattelman, and David Roman.
The 2019 Richard Wall Memorial Award for an exemplary work in the field of recorded performance will be awarded to Ian Christie, for Robert Paul and the Origins of British Cinema, published by the University of Chicago Press. A Special Jury Prize will be awarded to Rocky Lang and Barbara Hall for Letters from Hollywood: Inside the Private World of Classic American Moviemaking, published by Abrams Books. This year’s Wall Award Jury consisted of Kathryn Fuller-Seeley, David Pierce, and Stephen Tropiano.
