Barry Smith is Professor of Performance Arts, Research Coordinator of Performance/Live Art, and Director of the Performance Arts Digital Research Unit (including the Twentieth Century Live Art Archive, the National Review of Live Art Video Archive, the Arts & Humanities Research Board [AHRB] Digital Performance Archive and minor collections) in the School of Art & Design, The Nottingham Trent University, UK.
He has most recently coordinated a human/machine choreography project for the Wellcome Trust Sci-art and AHRB Innovations Programmes with performance artist Stelarc, the Centre for Computational Neuroscience and Robotics (University of Sussex) and the Faculty of Engineering and Computing, Nottingham Trent and is currently co-authoring a book for The MIT Press entitled Digital Performance: New Technologies in Theatre, Dance and Performance Art (2004).
