Performing the Past: the Virtual Revolution in Performance History
Hugh Denard (University of Warwick) of Theatron, discusses how the capacity of Virtual Reality (VR) to evoke space, time, movement, and sound is transforming the ways in which performance can be documented. Over several years, researchers in the School of Theatre Studies at the University of Warwick have applied VR to the historical study of performance. This paper analyses the work of the Theatron, Pompey, Skenographia and Appia and Arches Projects. It demonstrates how the availability of new types of historical documentation is beginning to lead to renewed models of research into performance history.
