"Preservation of Electronic Performance: New Paradigms"
The preservation of electronic works and the preservation of performance works each alone provokes challenges to traditional notions of conservation and preservation. Taken together, these types of works force us to re-conceptualize the conventional preservation notion that arose from conservation fields specializing in painting, sculpture, and books. In this talk, Howard Besser will discuss why traditional conservation approaches will not be effective for these types of works, and suggests that we adopt new conservation paradigms for dealing with these. He will use concrete examples from his collaboration with the Electronic Cafe International in trying to preserve their electronic performance art works over the past 25+ years.
